: 1. Is red henna the same as pure henna?
If it's hair henna, the answer is probably yes.

: 2. Is there any safe "black henna" out there?
Probably not. Check the colored henna forum.

: 3. What do the cloves do in the henna recipies?
They help darken the color and smell nice. Makes the difference
between an orange stain and a cinnamon colored stain on me.

: 4. Are there other things besides Coffee and lemon juice you can
add to the henna mix to get a darker color?
Strong black tea, cloves, black walnut hulls, red wine, something
called kathechu (I've ordered some from a natural dye company but
haven't tried it yet). Tamarind and fenugreek make the paste really
thick and sticky which help the paste have good contact with the skin
and ensure a better stain.

: 5. What recipe gives each of you the darkest color(chocolate, brown
: or black)?
I never get a really dark, dark color, no matter what recipe I use.
Henna that goes chocolate brown on my husband is cinnamon-colored on
me. I found that black walnut hulls made the color a darker brown,
but also seemed to form a granular pattern rather than a smooth stain.

: 6. what color should the henna paste be before you apply it?
Depends on what you put in it. My paste is almost black because I
have cloves in it. When I leave out the cloves, the paste is green.
