Some people who think henna is supposed to be black have seen pictures from North Africa (such as in "Africa Adorned") where the henna has been made black by one or another sort of base percipitate...and those who are familiar with Medieval Persian miniatures where the henna is depicted as black are also seeing the results of base percipitate. That is a valid tradition...but due to the local shortage of aged camel urine and bat pee, (great natural sources of ammonia) there's not a lot of traditional black henna happening. (And if it were available, how many people would be game to use it?) Many more, though, just want it "like Madonna" which is a shame. That was a really dumb move on someone's part! So many people are badly harmed by black hair dye henna. Jean Harlow simmilarly started a "platinum blonde" trend over 70 years ago that sent a lot of ladies wishing to be blonde bombshells to hospitals...and every year there is something trendy and gorgeous that gets a lot of folks in big trouble. Then, there's breast implants, lipo, mega-piercings....the list goes on! We're a species that love to play with ourselves, and we're frequently not very bright about it. Until then.....anyone who asks me to do henna on them can hardly get me to shut up about the history and traditions.....and NO ONE gets PPD black henna from me. However...about 20% of my clients's hand hennaes go black naturally in high summer heat!
