Anne,

I use a deep, narrow, fine mesh sieve (shaped like a U). I set it in a jar, cover it with plastic wrap if I want to avoid any dust (but this particular sieve sits very deep in the jar, so that's not much of a problem), and thump it with a spoon, fork, pen, whatever. It shakes the henna through the sieve quite nicely (this is how chefs do their flour). This is of course still a repetative motion, but it avoids your needing to use a tight grip and/or squeeze anything with your hand. You could even keep your wrist perfectly still & use an elbow motion. I got my nice deep little sieve from Sur La Table, who have a catalog if you're not near one.
