Honestly, I haven't been able to bring myself to do this. This may
also be the reason that the "Persian Black Henna" tradition did not
cross into India with the Mughals, though the technique of patterning
did. There are a few telling miniatures from 16th century India,
such as one where a Mughal prince has 2 consorts in Persian dress
with black patterned henna and 2 consorts in Indian dress with red dip
henna. The ladies in India were as squeemish about putting their
hands in urine as I am. (They also felt red was wonderfully auspicious
and black was not).
I can't account for why I have no problem putting my hand in household
strength ammonia for 7 minutes, but I just can't put my hand in a
basin of urine. I just don't think anyone would ever trust me to cook
dinner or shake my hand again for the rest of my life!
