I am first generation Turkish. My mother was born in Turkey. When I
was younger, we would have marriage ceremonies similiar to wedding
showers were we would gather and decorate our hands and feet with
henna. We use to combine our urine and soak out feet in hand in the
urine to get a very dark henna color.( We never thought about putting
henna on other parts of our body.) The mixing of urine symbolized the
coming together of the different generations. My great grandmother,
Grandmother, my mother and the young sisters and cousins would drink
black tea and then mix our Urine. It was a beautiful ceremony and
brought our families together in celebration of our newest additions
to our families. The colour of our hennas were terrific and so were
our memories.
