Hi:
I been on both sides of the coin so I kinda know where your
coming from. I'll offer a bit of my experience, feelings, & thoughts
to maybe help out.
I used to work for a Henna Arts company that paid me a 1/3
commission on all sales, no hourly wage just commission. I remember
being happy (at first) just being able to work with Henna and there
where days I didn't make didly squat. After a while I did resent not
making much money and even on a good day 1/3 seemed a little low,
especially after taxes. When I complained I was heard out but nothing
was done, when I complained some more my hours were cut - so I shut
up and accepted the situation.
Now I own & operate a Henna business and am seeing things from
another perspective. You can't imagine the work that goes into
management without pay, there are literally 100's of hours that go
into organizing shows, not to mention putting 100's of dollars into
equipment and rental space with no guarantee of a return, plus taxes!
Then the worries such as, what if it rains? or if it's to hot? (no
people in either scenario - which equals a loss). Is so & so gonna
show up to help? Is the car gonna break down on the road? Is it even
gonna be a receptive crowd? etc.... I've had some bad shows and I've
had some decent shows and a couple great shows this summer, so
everything sorta balances out and things work out ok.
What I'd say is that if your setting up, breaking down, and
running a show - your percentage should be somewhere around what your
receiving, because your getting into management (I pay 40 to 45% but
let the artists set their prices), if your showing up and working the
prime hours when it's busy and your still getting 50% I think your
getting off great - especially if it's cash money.
Just remember to try an see the big picture when deciding what to.
