Henna as Hair Dye

I have a bunch of Henna powder meant for dying skin. I am aware that
I can make a hair dye out of this powder using coffee, tea or water
(depending on the color I want). If I make this hair dye, how long do
I need to leave it in my hair, and is it okay to wash it out with
water? Are there any special things to do to make it adhere? My hair
usually doesn't respond to dyes or even bleaches very well.
