: I saw a henna kit in the window of a little store that sells rubber
stamps (which, by the way, might be a good technique for transferring
a design to the skin if you found a cool stamp).

It is, but beware - rubber stamps can be as addictive as henna!

I bought my first henna experience as a kit in Walgreen's, in a
cylinder (if you look carefully, it's from A.I.I. in Los Angeles). It
was about $15, but I think it was a good start if you ignore the
stencils. The only thing is the henna clogged the applicator tip, so
I had to resort to application by toothpick (slow). Now I know enough
to sift the henna. (The henna in the kit was of reasonable quality -
when I did sift the rest, there wasn't all that much junk, and it did
make reasonably dark designs.) Comes with eucalyptus oil, which they
say to rub into the skin before applying the henna. Although I now
know you can mix the oil or other mordants directly with the henna, I
find the skin rub to be rather a rather pleasant experience.

With just a little extra guidance (sifting and wrapping the design,
plus knowing that palms and soles take the henna best), I do think the
kit is a good, fast start for the compleat beginner.

There's another kit available in bookstores for something like $25,
supposedly complete, but as I no longer needed it, I didn't try it.
