Bottom line.....if your henna is really good, you don't need anything except something sour to get it going. If your henna isn't the best, there are SOME recipe things you can do which will improve it, but not much. You have to have something sourto get the dye release going. Bottled lemon juice will do in a pinch. Fresh vs makes less difference than you'd think. If you need some stickiness (the usefulness of tamarind, beyond its sourness) try bottled grenadine syrup. Other tannins (tea, coffee, all) ? They're not all that helpful, EXCEPT for cloves. Cloves make a difference. What DOES make a difference? Freshness and quality of the henna (like, DUH, nothing else is as crucial)... and HEAT. Anything you can do to get the henna paste HOT aganst your skin is going to make a BIG difference! Heating pads, extra blankets at night, wraps, drinking heavily, going dancing....things that make you HOT really change the dye release. Don't sweat the recipe. Sweat your henna, and ..just sweat!
