Bottom line.....if your henna is really good, you don't need anything
except something sour to get it going. If your henna isn't the best,
there are SOME recipe things you can do which will improve it, but not
much.

You have to have something sourto get the dye release going.
Bottled lemon juice will do in a pinch. Fresh vs makes less
difference than you'd think. If you need some stickiness (the
usefulness of tamarind, beyond its sourness) try bottled grenadine
syrup. Other tannins (tea, coffee, all) ? They're not all that
helpful, EXCEPT for cloves. Cloves make a difference.

What DOES make a difference? Freshness and quality of the henna
(like, DUH, nothing else is as crucial)... and HEAT. Anything you can
do to get the henna paste HOT aganst your skin is going to make a BIG
difference! Heating pads, extra blankets at night, wraps, drinking
heavily, going dancing....things that make you HOT really change the
dye release.

Don't sweat the recipe. Sweat your henna, and ..just sweat!
