Check a library - under architecture. Also Decorative Art. I have a
reprint of a lovely victorian book: The Grammar of Ornament by Owen
Jones. Color plates reproduce sections of designs from all over the
world, all sorts of sources (tiles, columns, ceilings, jewelery, one
or two tribal tatoos, rugs and other textiles, furniture, cemetary
stones...). It's INSPIRING. Basically, some Victorians had the
leasure to do exactly what you want - go around copying patterns from
everywhere.
