It certainly makes me think about the source of my designs.
Sometimes I copy what I find in books, and as I copy the design
changes. Or I copy it but the next time around I get bored with it
so I change it. I am grateful to the artists/authors for giving me
the impetus to further their designs. All this talk about copyright
reminds me that I should take a look at the designs on my website and
give credit where credit is due, not only for reasons of copyright,
but also in case anyone really likes a design and wants to know where
they can look for more of the same.

Thanks for an interesting thread.

: : I would think it was cheating if she had not done the mendhi work
: : herself. It is an example of the quality one can expect if they
hire
: : her to do Menhdi. Another thing I would like to point out is
that
: : she is not alone. You merely have to look at most of the henna
: : galleries out there to determine what henna books people own.

: Many of us, just starting out, were too busy with our day jobs to
have
: the time to develop portfolios of our "own" work, so we relied on
: published books. My first few appointments saw me with books in
hand,
: encouraging clients to pick from those (as I didn't really have the
: confidence or skill yet to come up with my own).

: : All of
: : the artists I have run into in the Seattle area are using books
: : published by others as part of their flash. Originality is not
as
: : valued as people wanting to know what their design will look
like
: : and have lots of ideas to chose from.

: I love the clients who pick "the flower from this page, the vines
from
: that page and the bird from this other page" because they force you
to
: combine ideas. Which is what all of this is about anyway-aren't
almost
: all of the traditional mehndi designs like this? A lotus is a lotus
is
: a lotus! Variations on a theme are what makes us all artists!

: Waht I really can't stand is someone who tries to say that thier
: simple, basic design (lotus, leaf, vine) is copyrighted. Granted,
put
: together a bunch of those in an innovative way and you can claim it
: your own. But the basic designs should remain free to use without
: punishment or defamation. I guarantee when my web page goes up it
will
: give credit where it is due. If that make people think I can't
: generate MY OWN ideas, so be it.

: What's that saying? "There is nothing new under the sun"

: We all own the right to each other's designs. By practicing this
art,
: one should commit to the idea of tradition. We are preserving the
past
: here! Heaven knows-if this hadn't become so trendy lately, would it
: even be an ISSUE?
