It doesn't wash off...but it can be lightened or darkened...

Yes, the little lawsones (hennotannic acid molecules) do bind firmly
to the collagen in your skin...but they can still be altered somewhat.

IE..your hennaed skin CAN be bleached(to make it paler), or it CAN be
oxidized (the ammonia trick)(to make it darker). Neither of these are
especially kind to the skin, though, and should be used carefully.

A fearsome batch of henna will penetrate all the dead cells down to
the living ones....and exfoliating them all at once is going to leave
some very raw exposed tender skin. Easy does it!
