It could be saumer - a paint derived from boiling the shells of some
nut that you paint on your skin and leave it there (don't peel off)
and it lasts for a couple of weeks. It is used in Yemen.
Unfortunatley my National Geo goes home instead of up to school so I
don't see it, but they feature henna a lot -- it's great. Just a few
months ago, they had a neat picture of a pregnant woman getting
mehndi done.
