I'm in high school, and between me doing mehndi, and wearing a bindi
I get more than my share of rude comments. The only one that REALLY,
and I mean REALLY offened me was when a guy shouted out "Hey, its
Madonna" and started singing "Ray Of Light". That really got to me
because it made me feel like they thought the only reason I did
mehndi was because I wanted to be like her. Which isn't true. I hate
it when people say that this is a phase I'm going though. But I've
had people walk into walls because they were staring so hard. I've
been called an "Indian-wannabe", and a dot-head, which made me mad.
Someone looked at my dipped fingers and said "Oh my god, did you do
that on purpose?". And that is just the tip of the iceberg, believe
me.
But some people are great about it. Just today this guy asked about
my hand and how I did it, and everything. He had drawings all over
his arm(using marker). I've had a lot of people ask about my mehndi.
I usaully start off with telling them how long it will stay on, what
I put it on with, etc. A lot of people say they love my designs, and
I that I do my mehndi really well, which makes me SO happy. Once I
brought some henna powder to school and gave a speech about mehndi in
English class.
Sometimes I do feel like yelling at all the rude people who stare and
make snide comments. But I try to restrain myself. Which doesn't
always work, but it does most of the time.
