Black walnuts definitely make a stain, but it's not as useful on skin
as henna. It's not a tannin, as far as I know...i think it's an
iodide .... and it's relatively likely to irritate the skin and smell
nasty. When I was very young, in the Ozarks, we smeared rotted walnut
muck on ourselves to play "Indians" ... and got swatted and scrubbed
by our grandmothers. Whatever walnut husk has in it, it does bind
with collagen, but can be smelly and can definitely provoke an
allergic reaction. Does a nice job on wool, though!
