There has been excellent research into this. You'll have no trouble at
all finding this if you look in the right place. Go to a university
library and get into the section on cosmetic chemistry, chemistry for
the cosmetic industry. Or, look for:

Jellinek, Stephan, "Formulation and Function of Cosmetics"
Wiley-Interscience, New York, London, Sidney, Toronto, 1970

Hibbott, H. W., "Handbook of Cosmetic Science"
The Macmillan Company, New York, 1963
