Incense doesn't do enough to make a substantial difference in the
color of the henna. Not all that much heat, not that much smoke...but
it is very very pleasant!

YOu can add any oil or scent to the henna that pleases you, that
doesn't harm the skin. In medieval Persia and Bagdhad, there were
elaborate formulaes of henna and harquus that included ambergris and
myrrh that wafted elegant fragrances from the hennaed ladies.
Caligraphing love poetry on the body of an odalisque in perfumed
henna was a highly regarded art and passtime!
