Henna will only release the dye when it is ph5.5 or more sour.
Ammonia in the paste inhibits the release of dye.

Once your skin is stained with henna, then you can percipitate the
color to black with ammonia, but you can only do so on your palms and
soles (because there the skin is thick and porous enough).

If you want the "how to" rant on making your henna velvet black with
ammonia, email me. I have several jpgs of blackened ammonia too.
It's similar to the way henna is blackened in North Africa and in
Medieval Persia.
