Easy trick to prove copyright

Someone once told me that a cheap and easy way to "copyright" your
work is to mail a copy of your work to yourself thereby proving the
date with the postage cancellation. Obviously you shouldn't open the
envelope.
I don't know the legality of this but it seems logical. You could
also email them to yourself leaving a little electronic trail that is
more easily followed that cancelled postage.
Put me on the list of people to buy your future book....I love all the
stuff you sent me and am working my way through the designs one by
