drum question

I have experimented on a couple of drums but I always scrape the
paste off. Is it better to leave it on? Does this bother people when
they are playing? What happens when it startes to flake off after a
lot of drumming? I guess I'd love to know what your thoughts are on
the whole process if you wouldn't mind. I'm planning on doing some
drums for holiday gifts and want do it right.
