A quick note first: the henna dye molecule is very small, and can penetrate and bind to the collagen that is your skin easily at body temperature. The molecule is only 2 carbon rings ... that's why it works so well. Dye molecules are usually very large. That's why when you tie-dye tshirts, you get stained, but it doesn't last the 3-4 weeks that henna does. Those molecules are too big to penetrate much. Henna dye molecule is exactly the right size to penetrate and bind to your dead skin, (the surface layer) but not so small that it penetrates your living skin. There are dyes people have tried to add to henna to change the color : 1)the vegetable kind of dye (like is used to color Koolaid) doesn't work well because the molecules are too big to penetrate skin cells beyond the very top layer. These are safe for your skin. However, They really don't penetrate your skin, so they don't stain it worth a damn . However, they stain everything else they touch. 2)the cloth and hair kind of dye (used color wool, hair, etc. ) doesn't work well, again because the molecules are too large to penetrate dead skin cells at body temperature. The cloth dye molecules vary from mostly harmless to carcinogenic. The hair kinds of dye, again, may be from ok to carcinogenic, but don't mess with them either. They don't work well. They may do you a lot of harm. Why risk it? That whole group is just a bad idea. 3) PPD dye may have been used on Madonna. I hope she just had Temptu. (Especially if she was nursing at the time.) PPD molecules are extremely small, just one carbon ring. They not only penetrate the dead skin layer, they penetrate clear into the blood bearing layer (living) of tissue. There, PPD creates absolute havoc on most people, causing blistering, scarring, and can get into the bloodstream and cause severe health problems. Link below.
