Ammonia makes designs black?

I've been wondering what makes henna tattoos black, and I didn't know
if it was a special kind of paste used, or if there was a treatment
done after it is brushed off. I know in a book by Aileen Marron
about Mehandi, it said that a chemical solution is applied after
henna-ing. And you say that Ammonia does it?
Does this work on areas other than the feet and palms, say, the legs,
arms and back?
