Two other things that I've read about applying to hennaed skin to blacken the henna, but tried without success are: Wood ash (very, very high ph)(caustic, too, wood ash leaches out lye) Lime (as in garden lime, not the fruit) (very caustic, used to quickly decompose road kill) Those just didn't work at all when I tried them. I even tried the hair straightener that reeks of ammonia ... it didn't percipitate the henna color, but it did take several layers of skin off. I don't know of anything else with a really base ph, other than ammonia and ammonia compounds (ie urine and sweat under heat stressed conditions) (ammoniac crystal) that will penetrate the dead layer and percipitate the henna. Maybe ammonia's the only molecule small enough to get in and do the job.
