If you let the henna paste dry to the point that it doesn't easily smear, the cling wrap technique works quite well, and doesn't damage even fine and intricate designs if the wrapping is done correctly. The Tuareg and some other desert people sometimes wrap the hands and feet after henna has been applied. It keeps the paste moist by trapping perspiration and keeps the desert air from drying the paste prematurely. I've seen this done with much coarser materials than plastic; palm fronds and banana leaves, and the designs held up well. All that was necessary was to give the paste time to dry enough that it was stable before the wrap wnet on.
