I do have a tattoo, myself, and I LOVE HENNA. Everyone has their own
personal answer for this. So here goes mine... (By the way P.J. --
luved your answer, rock on!)

It seems to me that you are trying to put henna under the category of
temporary tattooing (in other words, trying to be like a tattoo
without the permanence). It might help, instead if you categorize
both henna and needle tattooing under the file of "Body Decoration",
in which cases, across the world there are many forms of body
decoration.

Henna has its own history in the middle east and is not comparative
to needle tattooing except for the fact they both modify the body.
Yes, in our culture, where needle tattooing is the predominant form
of body decoration, it seems that henna is trying to step into the
limelight, but really henna is under its own spotlight.

Both needle tattooing and henna are awesome arts, but each is it's
own medium.

It's like trying to compare a motorcycle to a luxury car, yes, their
both modes of transportation, but each has it's own pro's and con's
and reputations...
