: Does most of you use free hand? If not, is there a better pattern : than the one you rub on? : Thank you for all your great ideas! There are many, many better patterns than the ones you rub on. Navneet books have many wonderful patterns which you can purchase at http://www.navneet.com (and they're cheap, only $2-$3 each including postage!) There are also some great line drawings on this site, just follow one of the buttons at the top. (It'll tell you which one is the right one.) The transfer probably interfered with the henna absorption. Believe me, you'll feel much more rewarded if you freehand. I had very little artistic talent when I took up henna, and I am able to do intricate designs now. I haven't progressed to the point where I can do my own patterns with confidence, but I have no problem looking at almost any pattern and applying it to myself freehand. BTW, another thing that people have noticed is that we are "henna ambidextrous". It takes a slightly different technique to use your non-dominant hand, (brace your non-dominant arm against your body while applying) but you will be able to henna with it. Even those of us who are complete klutzes with our off hand. Oh, and I use a jacquard-type bottle for application. It's too easy for me to make a mess, so I bought a bottle with 4 tips from Castle Arts (http://www.castleart.com) and was on my way.
