That's a pretty common practice in Morocco...while you are warming
your hennaed hand over the charcoal brazier they sprinkle cloves on
the coals and this is supposed to darken the color. They don't
usually doit more than once or twice so you're not breathing much of
the smoke.

Linda, you could try my recipe for getting the cloves into your
mixture. Just heat your lemon juice to a boil, add whole cloves, let
simmer covered for about an hour over low heat, strain through a
coffee filter and then make your paste. I can't really tell you
exact measurements but I usually empty a whole 32 oz. bottle of lemon
juice into the pan and throw in about 2 cups of whole cloves. This
gives you the essense of the cloves without being as caustic as the
clove oil, and the house smells marvelous for a few days afterwards.
