Oranges and Lemons

I have some new powder that I'm still testing and I'm wondering about
the effects of different juices.
I mixed some up about a month ago using lemon juice and sugar,
letting the henna sit at mashed potato consistency sealed for 36
hours then thinning with more lemon juice, applying, sealing with
lemon-sugar, wrapping with toilet paper then plastic wrap and leaving
overnight. I removed the paste with olive oil the next morning and
it developed into a lovely deep reddish-brown that turned to almost
black over the next couple days.
This past weekend I mixed some up again. All the conditions are
about the same. No unusual stress, no illness, I'm still pregnant,
just a bit farther along. The only difference in the whole process
is that, while I got it to "mashed potato" with lemon juice, I used
orange juice to thin the mix. I got a deep orange-brown, a truly
lovely color, that three days later is very deep red-brown.
So I think it's the juice that changed things, but that just doesn't
make sense to me. I mean, it's got enough acid either way to release
the dye, and it's the same dye. It would make more sense if the
color was lighter or darker, but not that it would be a completely
different color.
Thoughts?
