Hennaing is done quite often at bar/bat mitzvahs and its popularity
is growing. Henna is not tattoing so it is not forbidden. Henna was
a tradition for sephardic jews though it has lost favor over time;
most people who are hiring henna artists for bar/bat mitzvahs are
doing it as entertainment and not really as part of their cultures. A
lot of Jewish brides are revisiting their ancient henna heritage and
including it in their celebrations; I get more calls for wedding
henna than for bar/bat mitzvah.

Catherine can probably tell you a lot more about the use of henna in
Jewish traditions.
