Back when how to get henna to stain really dark quickly (the pre-terp
days) was a BIG hush-hush, all I ever did was mix the powder with
tamarind soaked water and bits of melted catechu (a must-have from an
ancient Malay recipe).

The pic attached was done during pre-terp days, those were the times
when the "henna experts" treated you like a vicious spy out to expose
their secrets and eventually run them out of business everytime you
ask them "what do you put in the paste?" *BLEAH*. Thanks to Catherine
and this forum, we learn about terps and of course a million other
wonderful things about henna :).

This was Jamila henna mixed with tap water. Singapore weather is a
constant hot and humid and sweaty (90F and above) so it helped to push
the colour darker. I left the paste on overnight (~5 - 6 hours) and
the stain darkened magnificently to a deep plum red in 12 hours. No
wraps, no lemon+sugar, just left on skin and let dry and
crumble naturally.
