In reply to: My first Paid Party- many thanks to all of you! posted by Erika on May 26, 2002 at 19:06:30:

: I was at my first paid party last night. I was a little freaked at
: first, worried that the stains wouldn't show up. I had done some
: henna on myself, but took a shower right afterwards and the designs
: nearly faded away. I told everyone not to wash their designs for
: long as they could, hoping that was where I made my mistake.
: Evidently that was it because I redid my hands, let the paste flake
: off, and went to bed without washing them. This morning the stains
: are coffee brown. I hope everyone else had similar results. Does
: everyone freak about this? What do you do if you have a party and
: the batch doesn't work? I just told the hostess that if she was
: unsatisfied, that I stand by my work and I'd do another party for
: free. She seemed happy with that. I also gave her an extra bottle
: of henna that I had left so she could play. We're in a homeschool
: group together so I figured she could return the bottle any time.
: thought I could make up cones to give away to other party hostesses
: in the future. Being the party hostess, she didn't have much time
: to sit still so I could do designs on her.
: I knew this was going to be a rowdy bunch, because of the
: It was a sex toy party! Good thing I'm VERY open minded. There
: were even a couple of joints passed around. I got a contact high
: while I was doing one girl's navel and she was smoking. Hubby said
: I smelled like pot when I got home. That was a change from
: Cajeput. I was just hoping I wouldn't get pulled over by a cop on
: the way home. I figured I could tell him I was weaving on the road
: because I was trying to drive without smudging the henna designs on
: my hand. Thank Goddess I made it home without any trouble.
: At first, I only did 2 ladies and nobody seemed too interested.
: That was the first time I ever had henna out and people weren't
: lined up. The husband of the hostess owns a tattoo shop, and all
: the ladies were heavily tattood. I thought maybe they were
: that henna was a kids version of real tattoos. But then the party
: got into full swing and I did 5 more ladies. They were saying that
: this could give them some inspiration for new tattoos. A good way
: to try it out before they commit to living with a design forever.
: think I would have felt obliged to reimburse the hostess some if
: nobody was interested. She paid me $70 for 2 hours. I know that's
: cheaper than a lot of mehndi artists charge, but I'm not too
: confident of my skills yet.
: The lady who hosted the party said that people call her husband's
: shop once in a while, asking if they know someone who does Mehndi,
: especially around highschool prom time. She asked me to give her a
: stack of brochures and said they'd put them up in their shop. That
: was very cool!
: I haven't spoken with the hostess yet, to see what she thought, but
: over all I think it went well. I can't wait to do my next party.
: Fortunately, my husband is really supportive. His overtime at work
: recently got cut out, and I can do 2 parties a week or one night at
: a coffee shop to make up the difference. Being a stay at home mom
: is a huge contribution to the family, but it still feels good to
: contribute financially.
: I wanted to thank Maureen from for
: fantastic henna. The darkest stains are coming from the Kezzi-2
: the Navaid-2, those are fantastic no-fail powders. I'm still
: to work with the Kimia, I think I'll try just mixing it with lemon
: juice next time. I treated it like the other powders and lost the
: nice reds by terping it and adding tea. It stained a nice dark
: cinnamon with those though. I also want to let everyone on this
: board know how much I've appreciated all of the information and
: advice. I don't think I could have learned so much and advanced so
: quickly without your help.
: Many thanks and Blessings,
: Erika
