In reply to: Sun, sand, sea ... and HENNA! (a story to share) posted by Jewel on June 3, 2002 at 14:57:12:

: It was a day of sun (lots of brutal, scorching sunshine!), sand and
: sea last Sunday when Singapore staged the biggest picnic event of
the
: year (over 50,000 picnickers showed up) at Sentosa (a little island
: off Singapore). It was an attempt to break 2 world records at one
go.
: The biggest picnic and the longest BBQ pit (1 km). When Lezard
asked
: if I'd like to share a booth with him and another friend Debi, I
: naturally squealed YES!!!
:
: We were there bright and early to set up. All we got was a table
(we
: forgot to bring a tablecloth) and 6 chairs. Lezard brought his
stand
: and beautiful henna poster. Right in front of our booth was part of
: the long BBQ pit which snaked its way all along and around the
beach
: area. As we waited for the crowd to show up, I hennaed Lezard's
: fingertips and then Debi's left palm. A few days before, I've mixed
up
: a batch of MDH henna and froze it for my bridal mehndi. The first
few
: customers showed up within 30 minutes and all of us got into
business
: right away.
:
: The crowd grew bigger and bigger by 11am. Music was blasting
: relentlessly, a foam (bubble) party has started somewhere, lots and
: lots of people littered the BBQ area, the BBQ has started! Everyone
: was giggling and having so much fun despite the fact that it is
sheer
: lunacy to be BBQ-ing in that ruthless, ferocious sun!
:
: We had a steady flow of people coming to us throughout the day.
Lots
: of girls in bikinis and skimpy tops, shorts and barefooted. Lots of
: guys in just shorts (I hope they slap liberal amounts of
sunblock!). I
: thought I'd get more requests for armbands, shoulders, ankles and
: navels (with the amount of skin flashed that day) but I was
pleasantly
: surprised when more girls actually wanted their hands done. They
were
: a fun bunch, giggly and not exceptionally choosy with the patterns.
: Naturally, we do our best work on that kind ;). Lezard had many
: requests for his amazingly beautiful dragon! There was always a
crowd
: around him when he did his magic.
:
: I heard only one person asking if we have it in black (and Lezard
: instantly started his rant on her). Most of them are familiar with
: henna enough to know what it's all about. Some girls were
interested
: enough to know if they can learn it from us (YAY!).
:
: All in all, it was a fun day. I didn't make alot of money despite
the
: big crowd but I had alot of fun hanging out with Lezard and Debi
: (who are 2 of the most hilarious people I've ever met). I'm glad I
had
: this opportunity to do henna at such a setting. People are friendly
: and carefree and happy. This is one event that I don't mind doing
: again and again.
:
: When we packed up for the day, I was exhausted (mostly because the
: heat) but contented. The only thing that I'm sorry about is that
none
: of us brought a camera!
:
: Thanks for letting me share this ;) ...
