Muslin often doesn't have that coating, as many peole buy it to dye.
Fabric made up "ready to wear" in a garment often has some sort of
"sizing" that deters dirt and staining (read: dying).

When I work henna on muslin, I just plain work larger so the wicking
isn't such a problem. Also, I go terpless, as that seems to encourage
wicking. With Muslin, the henna comes up dark brown for me, too.
