Hi Anne,

I am glad that you are feeling better. This is such an excellent and
informative post about your encounter.

"She did ask "what about black people" - she was white - and I
explained to her that it's not about skin color, but about chemistry,
that I myself (dark blonde hair and fair, pinkish skin) don't stain
well off the hands and feet, though beautifully on those parts, but
that the women I hennaed this morning (as white as me but freckled)
stain beautifully, and for weeks, on their upper arms. She seemed
smart and understanding."

Yes...that is absolutely it. None of us can allow people slinging
the black harmful stuff to use the excuse of skin color as a reason
for using it. Your response was right on. Even if pure natural
henna powder did not stain worth a tinker's damn on dark skin...that
still would be no excuse to put something harmful on someone's skin.
But since we know that is not true, it is on our shoulders to spread
the truth. And I hope and imagine that most people using the black
stuff may be just like her...someone told them that their paste was
not harmful and didn't contain PPD so she felt it was safe to use.

One important thing may be to not just refer to PPD but also to be
informed about all of the other "names" that are used to disguise it
for what it is. Like she knew she was using hair dye but thought it
wasn't the same as Bigen or PPD...had no idea what the chemicals were
to look for on the package obviously.

Anyway...good looking out.

Maureen
