Having worked with Kree I've seen it done a lot, and just did my first
drum I was happy with while working with Kenzi at Dance Africa a few
weeks ago.
Kree says you should not add oils to the paste...something about
affecting the skin, and since she works with some picky drummakers I
think she's onto something.
Also...no lemonsugar or other sealant; just let the paste stay on as
long as possible, sitting it in the sun or near a heat source. Kree
keeps the paste on for a week I think, longer sometimes depending on
what the client wants. You can scrape it off or just play it off, and
the stain lasts for the life of the skin, and apparently gets darker
with usage.
Oh yeah, you can only henna leather, not plastic drumheads or anythign
that's been treated. The more porous, the better.
