Response from the NYC "black henna" artist
Posted by Anne Beltestad on June 20, 2002 at 13:13:47:As I re-read this I am remembering the woman who was at Brooklyn Pride
a few weeks ago using something she said was "safe" because it only
contained "a little bit of hair dye" - in other words, 75% henna, 25%
ppd, or less.
Obviously there is some contradictory information here from her
webpage (lasts longer? doesn't last as long?) and the more I think
about it the more I feel it's the same people.
Anyone have any advice for how to convey the danger to people who
think they're doing something safe? CCJ, or anyone - is there a lab I
can send a sample of this stuff to?
And if it's not PPD, what to say to people who insist on selling food
coloring as henna? It is my opinion that this leads directly to PPD
(PPD is cheaper, faster, and stains much better than food dye) and I
see it as not such an urgent problem but still bad. Any thoughts there?
Let me know as I want to maintain a dialogue with this woman in a
reasoned and intelligent fashion.
I just wrote a very long email to explain to you a few things but I
lost it when I went to back space something, I am actualy on the way
out but our product does not contain ppd.
I have salon and a store and sell the product to plenty of artists
and other salons and I am very careful of what I put in it being I
have allot to stake, We call it black cause it is darker than the red
and produces the stain faster. It is a pro formula and does not last
as long, 7-10 days, but I am happier using it than stuff with PPD that
makes a blacker stain.
I do apprectiate you concern as I am as well and warning others to be
careful of what they buy online etc, and not to use this Bigen stuff
etc etc. We teach pro courses and have done the
salon trade show such as IBSIn NYc every year and I am sure of any
risk of irritation of this instant formula since I have never had a
complant and I do at least 10,000 a year with all are parties, events
and our seasonal store ina high traffic resort area. IF you a phone
where I can reach I will try to contact you tonmorrow cause I am out
the do to work an event, I think you met Nina cause I dont
do any faird to often anymore cause I am at my store most of the
summer. call me anytime with other questions, 917-701-5371.
