I have seen henna with green specks in it more often then not. That
is why bright green henna powder is not an indicator of freshness. I
have taken Catherine Cartwright Jonesí advice and sniff the henna
powder for the grassy herbaceous smell. If is smells like nothing
then it is probably a dud. The green dye is probably a harmless food
dye but it makes it very difficult for me to tell when the dye
release has taken place because the green dye obscures any color
change in the paste. This is why I put henna paste in a plastic bag
and place it on top of a white facial tissue to determine when the
paste is ready.
