It may be synthetic - in which case there is no way to stain it. Did
you perhaps use oil in the recipe? Although several people have said
they used oil and it made no difference, I was told by a master
neqasseh in Morocco NOT to use oil because it bleeds on some skins
and prevented absorption on others.
Did you test your henna on skin before using it on the drum? Even
putting a dab on for 10-15 minutes will check to see whether your
henna is fresh and whether it has catalyzed sufficiently to use.
Some of the drums I have done were pretty light and I worried about
whether the stain would be okay. A month later though, they were
dark! Also, if you play the drums with your hands, the more you play
them the darker they will get.
Fishskin stains fine - I have henna'd fishskin doumbeks with fine
results.
If you think your drum is NOT a synthetic skin, I would carefully re-
henna it and leave the henna on, don't scrape it off. Just let the
henna gradually fall off with use.
