off topic on wildfires... feelin sad
Posted by Alissa on June 24, 2002 at 15:01:54:My dad's cabin is burning down right now in Show Low, Az. Luckily, if
you can say luckily, it wasn't finished and therefore was
unfurnished. It was however in the process of being built, and my dad
and his wife just bought that land a year or so ago as their dream
retirement home, a place to go to get out of Phoenix in the summer.
Now that whole area is going to be a wasteland if this huge ass fire
ever goes out.
Today the smoke is so bad in Albuquerque, you can't see the mountains
from anywhere in town. The air smells like a smoke and fire, and the
haze was so bad when we woke up today we were afraid there must be a
fire in our own forest causing so much haze and smelling so strongly
of smoke. I'm wondering if the airport will have to shut down due to
the visibility. The sun was blood red this morning, rising through
the haze of smoke, carrying for miles the message of its destruction.
Fire sucks ass. I *know* it's good for the forests, that is nature,
and nature is taking care of forests in the way that nature intended.
I know it's dangerous living anywhere, tornadoes, earthquakes or
hurricanes, or wild fires -- nature can destroy people's lives so
easily. I'm still sad, ... and scared.
My dad is so depressed. Insurance will cover the $$ losses but there
goes his whole retirement dream. The area they bought will be
devasted for at least 10-20 years while replanting occurs, and they
wanted to retire in another year or 2. Selling it will be selling at
a big big loss, now that the land will depreciate so much. It's gonna
be like retiring to Mordor.
sorry, i know this is so randomly off topic but since we've been
talking about it I just wanted a cyber place to come and hang my
head. I'm thankful every day our own forest we live in has been
spared, it is a tinderbox waiting to ignite too, and then there could
go our own home, up in flames.
Carrie, I have been praying for you up there. I didn't get a chance
to post a thread, but heannaed hands have been bent in prayer for all
of us here out west to find some relief. Cries for prayers have gone
up so many times, but still the blaze grows. This is the way of
things, i know. I suppose I'll just keep hennaeing and praying.
Maybe we should have another SSW next weekend, *that* brought rain.
If only the rains would come... only one more month to our rainy
season. Let's just PRAY PRAY (anyway) that the rainy season is rainy
enough. More drought would be devasting.
If only it would rain..........
