Black Henna At A Festival In Canada
Posted by Carly Munn on July 8, 2002 at 21:57:49:I was at a festival this weekend in Ontario, Canada and I was pleased
that there was a really good henna artist there. I got my hand
hennaed by her and it turned out really nicely. Unfortunately later
on in the day I wandered past another henna artist.
If I see someone doing henna I usually will stop and watch their work
for a while and chat with them. I was watching this lady when I soon
realized that she was using black henna!! I was really horrified!
It made me feel sick to my stomach to see her putting it on
I asked her if she would mind giving me a list of the ingredients she
used in her paste to bring to the festival coordinator but she said
she didn't know what was in it as she gets it from a wholesaler and
she got all defensive.
I imediately left the festival and went home and printed out a bunch
of info from this and Catherine's site about black henna and it's
dangers. I made sure to include the refferences to the medical
journals that Catherine had used to write the articles. I brought
them with me and tracked down the person in charge of the vendors. I
talked to him and gave him the info and he seemed concerned. He told
me that he would talk to the lady after he read it over.
I was very dissapointed the next morning to go back and find her set
up again. So armed with more info I went straight to the festival
organizer. Once again, this man seemed to be concerned and said he
would bring the info and go and talk to her. Again I thought the
problem was solved but later in the afternoon she was still there.
I am now in the process of writing a letter to the festival to see
why something wasn't done about this. I presented them with facts
that showed what she was doing was hurting people. I am asking them
to implement a policy whereby ABSOLUTELY NO BLACK HENNA be allowed at
the festival in the future.
Does anybody know if PPD in henna is illegal in Canada? I know that
it is in the States but I'm not sure of the laws in Canada.
One of the worst parts about it is the lady wasn't even advertising
for "Black henna." Her sign said Traditional Mehandi Henna. Now if
anyone has a reaction they will blame it on the henna and not the ppd.
If anyone has any suggestions of what to write in my letter to the
festival I would be happy to hear them. I am making sure I make it
totally clear that natural henna is safe and it's just the black
henna that is harmful.
Thanks for any suggestions,
