As far as I can figure out, it is an oxidation process, rather like a
cut apple darkening with contact with air. It happens faster and more
completely in heat, and more slowly and less completely in cool.
Indigo oxidizes to come to color, and a few other dyes do too. I
think what we're seeing is hydrogens getting ripped off the lawsone
molecule, facilitated by the monoterpene alcohols, or heat, or an
alkali ....... but I'm not a chemist, so I'm only responding according
to my own understanding.
