I agree with the others. Sounds like bad paste. Sometimes paste in
those tube really have to be emptied out and mixed up and have terps
added to them for them to work on an area like the back.

What I would suggest just as a rule of thumb is that when you are
unfamiliar with a henna powder or paste, always do a spot test on
your finger prior to committing all of your time and effort to a
total design. The finger dot test can usually let you know if you
are using a paste that is going to stain for you. No stain or poor
stain on the finger you know you hve some bad paste. That finger dot
test can save you a lot of frustration.
