In reply to: bad days, stormy weather, and beautiful sunsets (not entirely OT) posted by Anne Beltestad on July 19, 2002 at 00:10:34:I couldn't agree with you more Anne. While NYC is still shell
shocked and going through post-traumatic stress stuff, we also see
what is going on in the rest of the world and can now understand what
terror is like, and that empathy creates more pain and stress in us.
Plus, we are getting constant reminders of 9/11 in news reports,
trials, ceremonies for the end of recovery, the closing of a
landfill, the unveiling of the proposals for the World Trade Center
site etc. These reminders bring back unpleasant memories and then we
have 9/11/02 looming in the near future.
NYC has transformed into a somewhat kinder and gentler city (still
not very kidn and gentle compared with the rest of the country!) but
still we have to deal with huge budget cutbacks, more homelessness,
higher unemployment rates that anywhere in the country etc.
So where does henna fit into all of that? I guess we are like that
kind herbalist, dispensing beauty and tenderness onto the people of
our burg. We are helping people pamper themselves, adding beauty to
the world and maybe increasing people's understanding of a cultural
tradition that is foreign to us. I have always liked that role that
henna plays and it is one of my main motivations.
The money to support all of this will come (we have had some dud
events here lately!) and especially if we keep in mind WHY we are
doing this. I think your post is a potent reminder for me to
remember the WHY.
