The Chinese do not have an alphabet at all. Each character (symbol)
is a whole word, and I beleive there is no method of phonetic
representation. There are about 2000 commonly used symbols.

The Japanese, however, do have a phonetic spelling system, called
Kanji - you can use this to spell out anything you can pronounce
with the Japanese verbal gamut.
