Add metal ions to the complexity.

I am wondering if the metal ions present in the essential oils are a
factor in the faster oxidation or darkening of the henna stains. The
presence of titanium powder in some pre-made henna mixes give me the
impression that it is acting like a mordant or is at least important
in other ways. There are some henna recipes that stress the
importance of mixing in an iron container in order to darken the
stain as well as a belief that henna grown in iron rich soil
is ‘browner’. Perhaps the next test will be to add iron filings to a
henna mixture and test the color change if any that would result.
