The best info I've seen on indigo used to dye hair, skin .... is in
the book "Indigo" by Jenny Balfour-Paul, British Museum Press, 1998

Indigo use on skin runs parallel to henna in some traditions, and is
often used in conjunction with henna. Indigo was used as "blue henna"
on Yemeni brides, by Arab men ... and to make the eyebrow arch on wome
.... and a very long list of suchlike. Indigo was one of the options
for creating harquus that accompanied henna.
