Hi Anne,

Yep, you have to keep an arsenal of tricks in your bag when working
with kids.

And that, "I am waiting for you so that we can continue look" is
indeed always going to be more effective in the long run than "THE
STARE!" Especially today when so many children spend hours
practicing their own stare that they call "grit'n". Can you imaging
getting into a "grit'n" contest with someone you are suppose to be
teaching something...LOL!!! I also like the slightly different, "I
am waiting for you to quit cutting the fool so that we can continue
look." Yeah, I have seen "THE STARE" be so destructive. And I truly
believe that all it connotes to a child is that you don't like
him/her. And I also think that other children who see you give that
stare to another child can only deduct that you don't like that other
child. And problem with that of course, is that they will always
relate more with that other child than they will relate to you.

To have found a way for your 6th grade students to participate who
would have ordinarily been left out of the experience was a wonderful
piece of work to keep the group connected and make sure each was
learning some aspect and participating in some aspect of the
experience.

I love teaching children and just working with them in general and
can tell that you do too. Take care.

Maureen
