Actually, I think it peaked a good deal earlier... more like 2000
BCE.. but we have better records from the the later period, so we
PERCEIVE that it was peaking then... just because that's what we've
got material on. When you rebuild city on top of city, for hundreds
and hundreds of years, the lower levels are harder to evaluate than
