I like to go through pattern books and find something to inspire me.
I end up doing something totally unrelated more often than not, but
it gives me a jumping-off point. I really started understanding what
I call "additive" designs when I got the Dorine van Beunkel book. I
feel bad about recommending it because it seems much of it is
plagiarised, but it does give examples of small design elements that
build up to the full-scale designs we all adore. Start with a circle
and add squiggles, then paisleys, then a checkerboard something.
Expand outwards. I hope this makes some sense.
