Timing is very important, especially with terped paste. The
essential formula is as follows: mix paste without terps, wait for
dye to release (every henna powder is different), mix in terps, let
sit a little longer, use. You can experiment with variations on
timing but staying within this framework.

I use the same method you do, mix, wait 24 hours, terp and wait
another 24 hours before using; I can use this paste for about 3-5
days with great results. A friend of mine who uses the same
henna powder mixes, waits 8 hours, terps and then uses a few
hours later...and finds that he can't get a stain after 24 hours. So
much depends on your body's chemistry, the temperature in your
house etc. For example, if you are putting your lemon-clove juice
in while it's still hot this can cause the henna to release it's dye
quickly, somewhat shortening the life of your paste; in your case,
this may be what happened to your paste.

Keep experimenting until you find a method that works well for
you.
